Here's a little bit about my story and my main characters.
First Comes Love, by Gabrielle Meyer
As the youngest Hart brother, Hays has never been first at anything--so he's determined to be the first to marry. He sets his sights on the new teacher, Miss Emma Longley, but soon discovers Emma wants nothing to do with marriage, ranching, or Texas and plans to leave Hartville in two short months. Will Hay's charm be enough to convince her to stay?
John Coffee Hays Hart (23) is six feet tall with blue eyes and light brown hair. He’s kind, handsome and charming. He’s known as a flirt with the local gals, but it’s all in good fun. He has an easy-going nature and he’s prone to innocent practical jokes. While he uses his humor to cover-up his pain and heartache, he’ll do whatever he can to protect the happiness of the people he loves. The only reason he hasn’t married yet is because he hasn’t fallen in love. When he does, he’ll be as loyal and passionate about her as he is about his family and the Seven Heart Ranch.
Emma Longley (18) is about five-foot-seven inches tall with dark brown hair and pretty green eyes. She is confident, loyal and determined. She’s passionate about education and she loves working with children. As a teacher, she has many goals and dreams, and she values having a purpose and cause in life. While she tends to be serious, she can also have fun and loves that Hays makes her laugh. She’s good at organizing and planning events and hopes to make a difference with her short time in Hartville. She’s never been in love, because she’s never had time to find the right man. When she falls in love, she will take joy in making a happy home.

When I accepted the invitation to join this awesome collection, the lead author, Erica Vetsch, had come up with seven names of seven famous Texans and assigned the names to each member of the Hart family. John Coffee Hays Hart (known to his family as Hays) was the youngest of the brothers at the age of twenty-three. I immediately loved his name and decided then and there that as the youngest brother, he was fed up with his older brothers doing everything first! So I asked the six other authors if they would mind if Hays married first, which meant his story would come first in the collection.
Everyone agreed.
Since this is a continuity collection (each story is in chronological order), each author had unique challenges. One of mine was introducing the reader to the town of Hartville and many of the characters that would be important in everyone's stories. (On the flip side, I didn't have to worry about some of the details the others would have to deal with later on.) The first five or ten pages in a story are the most important. You want to draw the reader in and encourage them to keep reading. Since this collection reads like a full-length book, I had the pressure of keeping the reader's attention to not only finish my story, but want to read everyone else's stories, as well!
As you'll learn in the coming weeks, the authors in this collection worked very close together. On Saturdays each week, Erica will share more details about how we kept our characters straight, how we created a timeline that would work for everyone's stories, how we developed secondary characters, how we created and used a town (and ranch) map, how we communicated, and so much more. She was our fearless leader and she did an amazing job (even if I did drive her crazy asking so many questions those first few days...).
Above all else, this group of authors had fun! We loved creating the Hart men and I believe you'll understand why after reading the collection.
Tomorrow, I'll tell you a little more about Hays and Emma, and why I created them the way that I did. I'll also share one of my favorite memories while collaborating with these authors, and I'll be giving away another copy of Seven Brides for Seven Texans!
Now I'd love to hear from you! Have you read a series like this before? What questions do you have for me (or the other authors) about creating this collection? Do you enjoy stories set in Texas? What's your take on handsome cowboys? :)
Don't forget to comment! I'll choose one winner from today's comments and announce them on the blog tomorrow (be sure to comment before midnight tonight!).
Also, don't forget to RSVP for the Facebook Party on Thursday, December 1st or enter the giveaway on Goodreads for a chance to win one of seven copies of Seven Brides for Seven Texans!

Oh what fun! I can't wait to read each author's accounts of their stories. Wow, I never would have thought of that - the first story had to get us into the town and give us details like that. I adore stories set in Texas probably because I'm a country girl and have relatives there that we visited often.
ReplyDeleteHello, Susan! Yes, each author had their own unique challenges, depending on where their story fell in the line up. I hope you enjoy our Texas setting!
DeleteGabrielle, I loved your idea of having the youngest brother, Hays, decide he was going to the be the first to find a wife. When I heard how he planned to go about it, I laughed. Such a fun story!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Keli. It was a fun story to write. Hays turned into such a charming guy. :)
DeleteHays and Emma are adorable! I loved the way you kicked off the collection, and I think readers will, too!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Erica! All the couples are special in this collection. Bowie and Elise definitely made my heart pitter-patter a little faster.
DeleteI love handsome cowboys abd I have lived in Texas my whole life, so I would absolutely love to read this book. It sounds wonderful!
ReplyDeleteCowboys are growing on me! I'm a Midwest girl, and we don't have Cowboys around here. I did love creating several for this collection. :) Especially Hays.
DeleteI love handsome cowboys abd I have lived in Texas my whole life, so I would absolutely love to read this book. It sounds wonderful!
ReplyDeleteI have not read it yet , but can't wait to read each authors story . I love these kind of stories . I love the names that was chosen . Sounds like you have a good kick off to this collection .
ReplyDeleteErica did a marvelous job with the names! It was fun to do a little research on John Coffee Hays and add it to my story. Thanks for stopping by, Elizabeth!
DeleteThis looks like it will be a good read -- :)
ReplyDeleteThank you, Connie! It was a lot of fun to create his collection. I hope you enjoy it!
DeleteI love everything about the concept for 'Seven Brides For Seven Texans'- can't wait to read Hays and Emma's story and that of the other Hart brothers. No, I've never read a series like this before, however, I do enjoy stories set in Texas and who doesn't love handsome cowboys, LOL?? Thanks for the giveaway opportunity!! Shared post.
ReplyDeleteBonnie!! So nice to see you here. Yes for those cowboys!! :) I'd never read a collection like this one before writing Seven Brides for Seven Texans. I hope you enjoy it!
DeleteI want to know how hard it was to coordinate with the other authors? The book sounds awesome and I'm hoping to get a copy.
ReplyDeleteIt was challenging to coordinate all the details, but it wasn't overwhelming. Erica was our leader and she did an awesome job of keeping everything straight. She created a master document where all the information went, and we each had a copy to refer to. We also had conversations with individual authors when we needed to use a specific character, just to make sure we got him/her just right.
DeleteI love romance series like this one (especially ones that take place in Texas). I love how cowboys are hardworking. I would love to win a copy of this series.
ReplyDeleteCowboys are hardworking! Even fictional ones. :) Thank you for stopping by, Kirsten.
DeleteThanx for introducing us to Hays and Emma. Looking forward to learning more about the author connection and reading the collection.
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome, Jennifer. Hays and Emma were fun characters to create, and their personalities made it easy for them to have a lot of tension and conflict, which is good in a story! :)
DeleteI love stories set in Texas; I have several historical fiction books set in TX and I so enjoy reading about that environment. Can't wait to read this collection!
ReplyDeleteI love stories set in Texas, as well. It's a popular setting for historical romances.
DeleteNow I'd love to hear from you! Have you read a series like this before? I have not read a series like this in the past. Exited to see what it all entails and to hear stories from all different authors! How hard was it to collaborate and make sure it all lined up and worked? Do you enjoy stories set in Texas? Sure! What's your take on handsome cowboys? :) Married one!! Ha!!
ReplyDeleteLove your last comment: Married one!! :) It was challenging to collaborate, but we did a lot of work up front, so we could each write our stories without needed to bug the other ladies too much. :) Each brother had a very distinct personality, and it was easy to place them within a story. I'll be sharing a little more about how we ensured that all the details were correct in tomorrow's post.
DeleteContinuities are such fun! I love getting immersed in the characters and setting. The seven of you must have worked well together to bring seven romances to happy-ever-after endings. What was the hardest challenge?
ReplyDeleteWe did work very well together! Erica did a great job compiling the list of authors. Everyone is professional and experienced with writing, so it went very smooth. The hardest challenge was trying hard not to write something that would be out of character for one of the other brothers! Since mine was the first story, I had to make sure I introduced each brother in a way that would intrigue the reader to wonder about him, but not give away too much. I like a good challenge. :)
DeleteSherida, I'm currently a guest on the Sword and Spirit blog, where I've listed many of the details/charts that the 7 Brides authors used to keep the stories and characters straight. Here's the link if you'd like more info: https://theswordandspirit.blogspot.com
DeleteGabrielle, Your novella was a great kick-off for our collection. I know readers will love Hays and Emma.
ReplyDeleteI don't think I've read a book like this... but I'd love to!
