Interview With Dr. Travis Hart

Hello, everyone! I have Travis Hart here with me today, and though the good doctor has plenty of demands on his time, he’s agreed to let us have a few minutes for a short interview. He’s also promised to answer every question HONESTLY, and I intend to hold him to it. Ready, Travis?

Travis: I’m ready. (To himself: I hope she doesn’t get too personal here. Or ask about Pa’s edict. My brothers and I would really rather not go into that, yet again!)

Me: Sooo, Travis. What do you think about your father’s announcement that all of your brothers must marry before the end of the year?

Travis: (Smile polite, but forced.) No comment.

Me: Travis! You promised. (Shaking my finger, but still smiling, because, ladies, Travis Hart is one good-looking doctor.)

Travis: Very well. Quite honestly, none of us are very happy about Pa’s plans. We all consider ourselves old enough to choose who, and when we marry, and aren’t pleased that he’s forcing it upon us. Some of us are more amenable than others to the arrangement—my brother, Hays, for one. He actually rather LIKES the idea.

Me: You don’t? Why? None of the ladies in Hartville catch your eye?

Travis: (Deeply regretting his agreement to answer honestly.) There are many virtuous and kind women in Hartville.

Me: But you aren’t attracted to any of them?

Travis: No. (Shifting in his chair and glancing continually at the door.)

Me: Oh, come now. If you’re not, then that must mean your heart is already taken. By whom? And remember…you promised to tell the truth.

Travis: There was…someone. Once. But she married someone else. And though he didn’t survive the war, I’ve heard rumors she married again. Though, I’ve never put much stock in rumors. Look at our town seamstress, or as she likes to be called—Miss Spanner, local modiste. She’s always saying things that aren’t true.

Me: Yes, well. That’s beside the point. Hypothetical question, here. If this woman somehow returned to Hartville, what would you do?

Travis: (Smiles slowly, almost tenderly, as if remembering something.) Well,  I’d do my best to prove myself worthy of her. Annie Parker was…someone very special. (His smile vanishes.) But she’s gone now and I don’t expect to meet her again. And if you’ll excuse me, I think I hear someone going into my office. (He stands.)

Me: I wouldn’t want to keep you from tending the citizens of Hartville. Thank you for your time, Travis.

Travis: Nods politely and exits.

Me: If you want the scoop on whether or not our handsome doctor ever reunites with this mysterious love from his past, be sure to grab a copy of Seven Brides for Seven Texans, available now!

    1. I totally agree! Several of my heroes have been like that, more beta than alpha. Though after reading Bowie's story, I'm so tempted to write a dark and brooding Heathcliff style hero. :)

    2. I would read that story! :) Bowie was a bit of a departure for me, but I LOVE him! :)

  2. How nice of Travis to visit, although he's a bit on the reserved side, isn't he? You got him to admit that Annie Parker holds the key to his heart, though. Good for you! Now to see if anything comes of that...

    1. You're more than welcome, ma'am. Though I was rather uncomfortable with some of the questions posed. But I'm glad you enjoyed them. Now, I must get back to my patients.
